Cast-Iron Skillet Apple Crisp
Cast-Iron Skillet Apple Crisp
Serves: 6–8
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Bake Time: 35–40 minutes
Sweet summer apples, a golden buttery oat topping, and just the right touch of cinnamon. Baked until bubbly and best served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. An easy summer dessert that's perfect for backyard dinners, BBQs, and sharing with the people you love.
Ingredients
Apple Filling
-
6 medium Honeycrisp apples, peeled and sliced (about 6 cups)
-
2 tbsp butter
-
¼ cup brown sugar
-
2 tbsp granulated sugar
-
1 tbsp cornstarch
-
1 tsp cinnamon
-
¼ tsp nutmeg
-
⅛ tsp ground cloves (optional)
-
1 tsp vanilla extract
-
1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
-
Pinch of salt
Crisp Topping
-
1 cup old-fashioned oats
-
¾ cup all-purpose flour
-
¾ cup brown sugar
-
1 tsp cinnamon
-
¼ tsp salt
-
½ cup cold butter, cubed
-
½ cup chopped pecans (optional but delicious)
Instructions
-
Preheat
Heat oven to 350°F.
-
Make the filling
In a 10-inch cast-iron skillet, melt the 2 tablespoons butter over medium heat.
Add:
-
apples
-
brown sugar
-
granulated sugar
-
cinnamon
-
nutmeg
-
cloves
-
salt
-
lemon juice
Cook for 6–8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples just begin to soften.
Sprinkle the cornstarch over the apples and stir until everything is glossy.
Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla.
-
Make the topping
In a bowl, combine:
-
oats
-
flour
-
brown sugar
-
cinnamon
-
salt
Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Stir in pecans if using.
-
Assemble
Evenly sprinkle the topping over the warm apples.
Don’t press it down—you want lots of crunchy little crumbles.
-
Bake
Bake for 35–40 minutes, until:
-
topping is deep golden brown
-
apples are bubbling around the edge.
If the topping browns too quickly, loosely tent with foil for the last 10 minutes.
Serve with…
🤍 Vanilla bean ice cream
🤍 Fresh whipped cream
🤍 Salted caramel drizzle
🤍 A sprinkle of flaky sea salt (my favorite little upgrade!)
